Athlete's foot is a common fungal infection that can cause itching, burning, and scaling on the feet. It typically develops between the toes, but it can also occur on the soles or sides of the foot. Here at Braintree Podiatry we can help you determine the best treatment for your particular case.
Athlete's foot is a fungal infection that can be spread by contact with infected skin, either directly from person to person or indirectly through contact with contaminated surfaces. Communal areas such as swimming pools, gyms, and locker rooms are common places where athlete's foot can be spread. People who sweat more are also more prone to infection.
Athlete's foot can cause a variety of symptoms, including :
It typically occurs on moist, waterlogged skin, usually between the fourth and fifth toes initially, but it can also occur on dry, flaky skin around the heels or elsewhere on the foot. If left untreated, the condition can spread to all five toes and sometimes to the soles of the feet, and large, painful fissures can develop

Dry athlete's foot:
If you have athlete's foot on a dry area of your foot, such as your heel, you can treat it with an anti-fungal cream or spray. You may also need to use a steroid cream to help reduce inflammation.
Moist athlete's foot:
If you have athlete's foot on a moist area of your foot, such as between your toes, you will need to take a different approach. First, wash your feet with cold water and dry them thoroughly. Be sure to dab your feet dry, rather than rubbing them, as this can irritate the skin. You should avoid using moisturizer between your toes, as this can trap moisture and make the infection worse. A spirit-based preparation, such as surgical spirit, can help to dry out the skin and soothe the itching.
